A study conducted in the UK, by social email provider harmon.ie, revealed that 41% of workers have remained glued to their screens, sending texts or checking their emails during face to face meetings with colleagues.
It also found that a third have disrupted important discussions to answer their mobile phone, despite the fact that four out of 10 agree it is rude to do so.
David Lavenda, vice president of product strategy at harmon.ie, said the "perceived pressure" to stay connected was leading many to neglect their manners.
"Thirty years ago, only doctors carried pagers. Reaching out to them after hours was only for matters of life or death. Yet, today … tools designed to [make] us more productive are encroaching upon our personal lives," he added.
Researchers found that communication and social tools are nowadays very rarely put down, with 85% of workers staying connected at weekends and 74% keeping in touch with the office while on holiday.
Meanwhile, a study by the Cornwall Development Company has shown that over 10 million UK employees have seen their work life balance deteriorate as a consequence of the recession.
